Owen Sutton nominated for Apprentice of the Year

18th Sep 2024

For many young people, finding the right career path straight out of school can be daunting. But Owen Sutton, Branch Sales Assistant at Keyline Braintree, has taken a confident first step.

He’s nominated for Apprentice of the Year at the BMJ Industry Awards, after already scooping Apprentice of the Year from the Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants awards in March. We spoke to Owen to share the secrets to his success, and his advice to new starters in the industry.

How does it feel to be nominated?

It was a really nice surprise! I didn’t know my manager had nominated me. It’s great to be acknowledged, a fantastic surprise.

What has your experience been like as an apprentice?

I’ve completed a Level 2 entry trade supply apprenticeship, which involved learning about all of the business, from the transport side and the yard, to the construction industry as a whole. But mostly learning about the sales side – my role is in sales, so I was doing this every day.

I’ve learned so much since I started and really grown in confidence. We’ve actually hired another apprentice, and he’s been shadowing me and I’m leading his training. It’s made me realise how much I’ve learned, and shows a lot of faith in me – I love teaching and helping people, and it’s boosted my confidence as well!

I finished my apprenticeship in April with a distinction – I’m now very independent in my sales role, and look after customers of my own as well as the team’s.

What’s been your biggest challenge?

Balancing between my everyday work and my apprenticeship was tricky early on. It was challenging at first but I had really good support from my managers.

How can more young people get involved in the industry?

There’s thousands of apprenticeships available with the Travis Perkins Group, so the opportunities are there!

I think just spreading more awareness of the job roles within the industry would help. At careers days in school I didn’t see anything about construction, but it’s an industry that’s so broad and there’s so much that you can do – there’s a job for everyone in it.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Always being proactive. It can be as simple as asking your colleagues if there’s anything you can help with – it shows a willingness to help and to learn. I now take that into being proactive with customers.

What advice would you give someone starting an apprenticeship?

Ask for help when you need it. And ask why you’re doing it because then you understand the process. I’m always trying to learn and looking how to progress – I always put myself out there, and look to go the extra mile.

It’s hard to be confident at a new job. There’s so much to learn, and it can be quite daunting. Just go in with confidence. Everyone has to start somewhere; everyone’s been in your position at some point!

What are the next steps for your career?

I hope a sales management role isn’t too far away! I’m trying to put myself in the best position for that – I’ve got to have faith in myself. I love teaching people and supporting their progression, so being a manager really appeals to me.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I’m a massive football fan – I support Tottenham. Football’s always been a part of my life – I was in a football college program while I studied my A levels.

We’re wishing Owen good luck at the ceremony, and a very well-deserved congratulations for the nomination! If you’re interested in following in Owen’s footsteps, explore the apprenticeships on offer with LEAP Apprenticeships & Early Careers today https://www.leapapprenticeships.co.uk/
